infinitas gracias: mexican miracle paintings.
this term i am loving my latin american visual arts class. for some extra research, and because im completely in love with the mexican aesthetic, i went to check out the mexican miracle painting exhibition at the wellcome collection in euston.
the paintings, called ex-votos, are created to thank saints for moments of divine intervention. when the creator has experienced a miracle moment in their life, they paint a picture of the often gruesome event, accompany it with a thank you note and a description of their miracle, and then place the ex-voto on the particular saints shrine. these types of painting were a huge influence on one of my favourite artists - frida kahlo.

i really enjoyed the exhibition and look forward to seeing more things at the wellcome collection. i really recommend checking it out.

bonnie “prince” billy // hackney empire.
last week i went to see bonnie “prince” billy at hackney empire. id never seen so many beards in one room.
it seemed like everyone had the same idea as us and went for a pre-gig vietnamese on mare st. but we ate some tasty summer rolls and deep fried squidldlys. i recommend going to the green papaya.
then we strolled up to hackney empire for the gig.
i’d never seen him live before and thought it was awesome. the girl who was singing with him, angel olsen, had a really unique voice. fell in love with her a little bit.
they ended on a cover of this song by richard and mimi farina…
afterward we had a stroll around the theatre, as we had never been inside before. we found roald dahls seat…
and found some other tiny seats…
and ended with a drink at the spurstowe. lovely evening.

a royal visit.
this morning the prince of wales made a visit to one of my favourite streets in london - lower marsh. as i live 1 minute from this lovely street, i went to check out the vibe.
it was a great chance to take some of my first photos with my new fujifilm instax mini 25 camera. these were my best shots…
i will eventually scan them but ive lost the cable.

borgen and beverly hills 90210.
the 2 programmes ive been watching recently. so different, but both pretty awesome…
borgen is helping jamie and i learn some danish. so far we’ve pretty much mastered statesminishtar and schpindoctor.
…and beverly hills 90210 is fulfilling my obsession with all things that are cheesy, from the 90s, american and require absolutely no mental input to enjoy.

a perfect day in SE1…
start at white cube on bermondsey street.
stroll round the current anselm kiefer exhibition - il mistero delle cattedrali.
and then check out the white cube bookshop.
after white cube, head further down the road to tapas restaurant - josé
it has some of the best tapas ive eaten outside of spain and great pan con tomate.
then head to borough market to buy something for dessert.
this is by far my favourite treat from borough market from ion patisserie…

the aubin cinema
yesterday i went to the cosiest little cinema in shoreditch. the aubin cinema.
you can sit on comfy sofas, which have foot stalls and you are given blankets to snuggle while you watch the film.
its very small:
…and there are two seater sofas at the back. perfect for a super long film like girl with the dragon tattoo (which i didnt think was as good as the book)
cant wait to go back to see the steve mcqueen film next week.

wise cracks of woody allen at bfi.
this week a group of us went to the bfi to see one of my favourite films ever, manhattan. despite living minutes away from the bfi, i had never seen a film there before and manhattan was an awesome bfi introduction.
some of the reasons you should watch manhattan:
tracy’s eyebrows. and one of them always curling up a bit at the end.
meryl streep is in her prime, playing a hot lesbian.
as with annie hall, diane keaton’s character’s style is perfection.
